12-1:30pm - Acacia Undies (beginner panties with stretch jersey) with Alyson Olander

Make a pair of jersey knit underwear using the Megan Nielson Acacia Undies pattern and try out different elastic finishes. Pattern includes sizes up to 58" hip. Class is suitable for anyone wishing to learn to sew with stretch fabrics on a low-stakes project. Kits will be available for purchase for $15 and contains everything you need to make at least 1 pair of underwear with your choice of elastics.

Supply List
IMPORTANT: The only thing necessary to bring to class is a sewing machine that sews a zig-zag stitch (3-part zigzag is optional), scissors or rotary cutter, pins and/or clover clips, and sharp scissors for trimming. EVERYTHING ELSE will be available as part of the kit ($15 - fabrics, elastics) and as loaners (jersey needle, poly thread).  The pattern will be available for tracing in or before class, along with pattern tracing paper.

If you choose to purchase your own supplies, the list is below:
  • Acacia Undies (Straight, Curve, or Mini) pattern by Megan Nielsen  The Acacia pattern can be obtained for FREE by joining the Megan Nielsen  newsletter/mailing list. Visit https://megannielsen.com/collections/free for the link  to join and later to download your free patterns. Acacia is available in 3 sizing options: Straight sizing, which fits Australian sizes 0- 20 and includes instructions for knit elastic, fold-over elastic and picot or decorative  lace edge elastic; Curve which includes the same instructions as straight sizes and  fits Australian sizes 14-30 or up to a 58” hip; and Mini, the kids sizing version, which  adds instructions for fabric waist & leg bands.
  • Half yard PRE-WASHED 4-way stretch cotton jersey. Jersey should have at least 20% stretch  and good recovery. I really like Art Gallery knits for this.
  • 6”x6” square for crotch gusset lining (OPTIONAL – you can choose to use the same fabric as  the outer layer of your panty for the gusset lining.)
  • Approximately 2 yards elastic for leg openings (fold over Elastic (FOE), picot, or regular ¼  inch knit elastic)
  • Up to 2 yards waistband elastic (FOE, picot, stretch lace waistband elastic, soft waistband  elastic or regular knit elastic)
  • Ball point, jersey, or stretch needle
  • Matching or coordinating polyester thread. Matching the elastic is preferable and can hide many mistakes!
  • Steam iron or an iron + water in a spray bottle

2-3:30 - Intermediate Free Motion Quilting: Curves and Swirls with Jessica Skultety

This is for confident beginner/intermediate free motion quilters. You should already know how to set up your machine and have done some practice FMQ on your own. Please note: this is a drawing AND
quilting workshop – there will be lots of freedom to practice both or either one!

Want to skill up your free motion quilting game? Jess Skultety (@quiltyhabit) will show you how to make a variety of swirl/curve/wave designs! I’ll provide tips and tricks for both drawing practice and quilting,
and share some of my favorite tools to achieve smooth, beautiful FMQ on your home machine. I’ll also bring some of my quilts from the past 13 years so you can see the designs in real quilts.

You’ll practice:
  • Pebbles of all sizes
  • Spirals and variations
  • Woodgrain and flames
  • Cascade designs (rainbows, pebbles)
  • Whatever else we have time for!

Cost of materials: About $20 for fat quarters/batting (see below), otherwise can use CONTRASTING
thread you have.

Before class:
  • Create 2-3 quilt sandwiches (I recommend solid fabrics or fabric that is more plain than busy, so you can see what you’re doing).
  • Sandwich a fat quarter, batting, and another fat quarter. It’s okay if it’s not perfectly lined up. Pin on the edges or spray baste.
Supply List:
  • 3-5 sheets of drawing paper (blank computer paper works well)
  • Pencil or pen
  • 2-3 quilt sandwiches – must prep in advance (see above)
  • Thread and bobbin, contrasting to your practice quilt sandwich fabric colors
  • Free motion quilting foot
  • Domestic machine
  • If you have machine quilting gloves, feel free to bring them. They are not a necessity, but they help. I use Machingers.
  • If you have an extension table for your machine and you think it would help, feel free to bring – but also not necessary.

4-5:30 - Kuguri Sashi Coasters with Lynne Mackay-Atha

Come learn kuguri-sashi, a traditional form of Japanese needlework.  Although it looks complicated, it really is a very relaxing, and forgiving, hand sewing project.  First you make simple sashiko stitches on a grid.  Next, the thread is woven in a pattern through the stitches.  Vary the first stitch pattern, vary the weaving portion, vary the background fabric, vary the thread… the possibilities are endless!  You can create kuguri-sashi on clothing, placemats, bags, quilts… whatever you desire.  To learn this technique we will make a sample that can be finished into a coaster, plus you will have enough material left to make a second coaster.  We start with the parallel lines and then move on to the weaving process.  You will probably finish all of the stitching and weaving for one coaster in class, but if you don’t you will be far enough along to easily finish the stitching on your own.  And, you will leave with instructions on how to remove the marking and finish the coasters.  In addition, I will have samples of other kuguri designs and variations, including using other fabrics and threads and a list of resources to set you on your own stitching journey.

All of the necessary supplies are included in the kit.  Just bring yourself!

Kit fee and contents:
$7  Each kit contains pre-marked fabric, backing, flannel, a sashiko needle and needle threader and enough sashiko thread to complete two coasters.

10-11:30am - Improv Medallion Quilt with Janet Schoenfeld

A colorful quilt on a wood surface

Description automatically generated

Curious about Medallion quilts? Wondering if modern quilters make medallion quilts? The answer is yes! This workshop will help you add some new skills to expand your “toolbox”.
Inspired by traditional and modern medallion quilts, we will use modern quilting techniques such as improvisation and organic piecing, while including a nod to hallmark medallion features. To get our
creativity flowing we will discuss unique features in medallion quilts, and how they might enhance your work.

During the 90-minute workshop you will make your medallion block and play with organic cutting and piecing of different shapes, to include curves, wavy and straight lines, triangles, and
wedges. You can use these components to create borders surrounding the medallion.

Participants will receive design sheets to try out different layouts for sections surrounding your medallion. The sections can vary in size and use asymmetry in your overall design. I do
not expect participants to finish the piece within the workshop time. The goal is to go down the path far enough that you feel you can finish it on your own.

There is not a precise size for the quilt, 36x36” is a good target.
  • Designing a Medallion Block
    • Medallion quilts are known for emphasizing the beauty of nature, inspiring creativity, and “holding on” to timeless stories. So, before you come to the workshop, spend time sketching out your ideas.
    • Decide what size quilt you want and how much space you want the medallion block to use. The medallion block does not have to be a square.
  • Fabric Selection options:
    • Use your scraps, fat quarters, and 4-6 ½ yds of fabrics. Pull together a mix of fabrics that may include prints, solids, wovens, and low volume prints; make sure you have a mix of light, medium and dark fabrics to provide contrast.
    • I also am offering a curated bundle of ½ yds of 6 solids from Riley Blake. They will be available at the retreat on Thursday when Mid-Mod opens. I will send an email after workshop registration opens; you will be able to sign-up for a bundle at that time. You may want to incorporate prints or scraps from home to mix them in with the solids. The Riley Blake bundle is $26 + sales tax.
    • Visit the vendors tables prior to class.
    • Batting and Backing fabrics are also available to purchase.
  • Supply List
    • Sewing machine (used in our classroom and/or at your table in the main room)
    • Rotary cutter, mat, and scissors
    • 12-to-24-inch ruler (I will have a few on hand), chalk or other line markers
    • Pins, and a glue pen to help with bias seams when needed

Supply Costs: (Optional) Riley Blake curated bundle, $26+sales tax.

12-1:30pm - English Paper Piecing with Jaimie Orland

Slow down, relax and take a little break from the hustle of machine sewing this weekend to learn what English Paper Piecing is all about!

Modern quilters have been putting their spin on this age-old hand-stitching technique for years. And there is a good reason for it! EPP offers: (1) endless fussy cut potential, (2) papers that
provide precision, so you don’t have to (3) and the ability to stitch on the go or on the couch!

So join me as I walk you through all you’ll need to know to get you started. During class you will create a hexagon flower that you can finish as a coaster or a patch for clothes or sewing
projects. I’ll also share lots of project ideas and inspiration, in particular the ways you can incorporate EPP stitched pieces into projects you can then finish by machine. It really is a great
way to add a touch of handwork to your projects!

No previous handwork experience required!

Supply List:
Instructor will provide a starter kit for $30 that will contain:
  • small package of 1" hexie papers
  • 1" hexie acrylic template
  • small spool thread
  • size 11 milliner needles
  • 5 mini wonderclips
  • 1 sewline glue pen and refill
In addition you will need to bring:
  • At least 7 coordinated fabric scraps (larger than 2.5”)
  • Pencil/marking pen
  • Fabric scissors or a small rotary cutter and cutting mat
  • Snippers for cutting thread
  • Optional
    • Needle threader (for thin needles)
    • Reading glasses, if needed
