2016 Workshops

We are excited to offer a number of workshops at Mid-Atlantic MOD. Please find information below on workshops that will be offered, assuming there is enough interest.  Dates/times are subject to change as we gauge the interest.  If the time changes and you are no longer available to take a workshop you've registered for, you will be able to cancel without penalty.

All workshops are 1.5 hrs and cost $15 (in cash paid upon check-in at MOD - if you register for a workshop you will not be allowed into MOD until you have paid your workshop fees and you will not be able to cancel your workshop registrations).  Workshop times are included below along with approximate material costs, in addition to any kit fees the instructors may require.  Supply and material lists for each workshop will be provided at least 1 month prior to the retreat.

Note: There are 2 time slots that contain 2 classes running. Please be sure not to sign up for two concurrently running classes. Thanks!

Reverse Applique Workshop
Instructor:  Neva Asinari
Date/Time:  Friday, April 22, 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM

Description: Reverse appliqué is created when background fabric is cut away to show an appliqué shape sewn in underneath.  The use of this technique can create amazing visual effects on your quilt that can be precise or free form.

Students will view several examples and will create their first reverse applique on scrap fabric provided.  Then they will have the opportunity to create an improv mini wall hanging using multiple applique designs.

Approx. Material Cost: $10

Improv Landscape Workshop
Instructor:  Daniela Di Iorio
Date/Time:  Friday, April 22, 12:45 PM - 2:15 PM

Description: Based on abstract art influences, this workshop will show you how to use color, balance and scale to make small improvisational blocks to start a mini quilt top. You’ll also learn to create more freely by using scissors instead of a rotary cutter. We’ll work with a neutral palette and pops of color. The color pops are based on small pieces of fabric which means this workshop is scrap friendly!

Approx. Material Cost: $10-15 (or
students can sew from scraps or stash). Pattern will be provided for free.

Rainbow Dresden Mini Quilt Workshop
Instructor:   Heather Kojan
Date/Time:  Friday, April 22, 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Description: This mini quilt packs lots of techniques. We'll use the Dresden plate template, machine applique, alternate methods of preparing the center circle and pieced backgrounds.

Material/Supply Fee: $5, plus $8 for template if you don't have one

Incorporating Curves in Modern Quilt Design Workshop
InstructorMelanie Tuazon
Date/Time:  Saturday, April 23, 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM

Description: Students will see examples of creative uses for quarter circle block piecing in four of my quilts (Trill, Flounce, Floret and Mod cabin) and engage in discussion about their properties and potential. We will then piece curves in class and learn techniques for blending them seamlessly when assembling a design. Students will complete between 2 and 5 rounds of a curved log cabin design. They will also be encouraged to develop their own curved designs.

Approx. Material Cost:  $15

All in a Round Workshop
Instructor:  Sarah Bond
Date/Time:  Saturday, April 23, 12:45 PM - 2:15 PM

Description: This workshop will provide patterns and instruction for two circular blocks that can be used in combination with each other or in a stand alone project. One is a string pieced circle that can be paper pieced (pattern included). The other is a swirled circle involving curved piecing. Students will get a demonstration and instructions for both blocks and time to work on them in the workshop.

Hand Quilting: Big Stitch Little Stitch Workshop
Instructor:  Jessie Aller
Date/Time:  Friday, April 22, 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of needles and threads while learning the relaxing motion of hand quilting. Samples quilted with various threads will be on hand to help you visualize what you would like to achieve with your stitching, and students will be encouraged to discover a method of hand quilting that fits your personal style.
Participants should bring two fat quarters to work on in class, or they may choose from some gorgeous Anna Maria Horner fat quarters available for purchase from the instructor.  The quilted sample will make a lovely pillow top when you get home!

Approx. Material Cost:
$13 including a required materials fee of $7, payable to the instructor in addition to the workshop fee

The $7 materials fee covers a custom sampler pack of several types of needles and generous sample-sized lengths of various threads: several sizes of perle cotton, crochet cotton, sashiko thread, hand quilting thread, and more. Everything you need to experiment at a fraction of the price of buying it all yourself!  Batting squares will be provided as well.

The $5 materials fee covers include Tula Pink fabric that has been stabilized, "How To" handout for stitches, and Stitch Guide of the 2 samples.
